Audi A7 2019: Driving Reports and Full Details

The Audi A7 2019 is a passenger car of almost five meters in length and a design different from a traditional luxury saloon since the body has five doors instead of four. It is on sale for 64,230 euros (list of versions and prices).

There are two gasoline versions —45 TFSI and 55 TFSI, with 245 CV and 340 CV respectively— and three Diesel versions —40 TDI, 45 TDI and 50 TDI with 204, 231 and 286 CV respectively—. All have an automatic transmission, which depending on the version can be double-clutch (S Tronic) or torque converter (Tiptronic). The Audi A7 45 TFSI and 40 TDI have traction in the front wheels and, in option, in the four. The rest of the versions are always all-wheel drive.

The 45 TFSI and 40 TDI engines have in-line four cylinders and 2.0 liters of displacement. The others have six cylinders placed in a vee and 3.0 liters of displacement. In this file, we compare the two gasoline engines and in this other the three Diesel engines.

The A7 55 TFSI, 50 TDI, and 45 TDI have two electrical networks: one of 12 volts and the other of 48. The latter is connected to an electric machine that performs the function of starter and generator and with a battery (0, 48 kWh capacity). This system is designed to reduce consumption since it allows the engine to be switched off in some moments (more information in the driving impressions). Also, thanks to him these versions have the Eco environmental label of the DGT.

Audi A7 2019

Despite its similar appearance, it does not share the platform with the A7 that Audi launched in 2010 (more information) and renewed in 2014 (more information). The 2019 Audi A7 is a completely new model. What most distinguishes this second generation is the amount of driver assistance elements it can have.

By body type, the most similar alternatives are the Aston Martin Rapide S, the BMW 6 Series Gran Turismo, and the Porsche Panamera. The Mercedes-Benz CLS Coupé, although it has four doors, also competes directly with the A7. In this comparative sheet – with all these models, except the Aston Martin which has a much higher price than the rest – you can see the price of gasoline versions similar to the 55 TFSI, with all-wheel drive, their technical characteristics, and equipment. The Audi costs more than the 6 Series Gran Turismo and the CLS Coupé and much less than the Panamera.

The A7 is a recommended model to travel because of how comfortable it is in a broad sense: the suspension filters well, the seats are comfortable (and they can have air conditioning and massage), the noise level is low and the driving assistants they work well and facilitate this task. And it can also be done fast because of its stability and how easy it is to guide at that pace (more information in the driving impressions).

It is possible to choose between a configuration of five seats (Audi refers to the rear as 2 + 1, because, indeed, the center is for a pinch) or four with two individual rear seats. But if you want to travel in the rear seats there are other models, with the classic body of a saloon, which is preferable because they have more space in the rear seats and their occupants can enjoy elements that make travel more pleasant. They are the long-wheelbase versions of the Audi A8, the BMW 7 Series, and the Mercedes-Benz S-Class, and the Lexus LS. In the section Interior impressions, there is more information about the passenger compartment and the boot.

Audi A7 2019

The A7 can have almost everything that can be mounted on the A8 since the basic structure is similar. There are options to modify its dynamic qualities – steering on the rear wheels, three types of optional suspension (sport, variable hardness dampers, and air springs with variable hardness dampers; more information in the technical section), and a self-locking rear differential. active type. The exception is the active suspension called Audi AI.

The dashboard also has the same elements (an optional main screen for the instrumentation and two secondary ones) but a somewhat different design (image of the dashboard of A7 and A8). More information on using these displays can be found in the A8 article and its test video.

The headlights are always LEDs, but the standard ones can be replaced by matrix lighting – called HD Matrix LED; € 1641 – which create shadow areas so as not to disturb other drivers while maintaining the maximum possible illumination in the rest of their lighting field; or others —HD Matrix LED with a laser; € 2,710 —which also have laser diodes for high beams (they shine further away). The lamps, also in LED technology, are linked by a band that lights up. The light system, front and rear, perform striking light sequences when locking or unlocking the doors (video).

There are two multimedia systems available, both with a browser. The standard -MMI navigation- and the optional -MMI Navigation Plus- (which gives more features, has a 10.1-inch screen instead of 8.8 and with which the virtual cockpit is also included, which is like Audi calls the screen that acts as the instrument panel). You can also choose two optional stereos, both developed by Bang & Olufsen. Other possible options are a four-zone air conditioner that ionizes the air and has an air freshener, an openable glass roof, or windshield wipers that expel the water directly onto the windshield.

Depending on the safety and assistance equipment, the A7 can be equipped with up to five radar sensors, five cameras, 12 ultrasound sensors, and a laser scanner (the box on the right side of the grill; on the left side goes the radar). These serve to assist, among others, the active cruise control with traffic jam detection or the lane-keeping system. As an option, there is a series of assistants that will be available after the launch of the first units, during 2019. One of them, called Audi AI remote garage pilot (within the Audi AI parking package), helps the driver during maneuvers in parking lots by guiding the steering wheel to avoid friction, you can park the vehicle in the selected space without intervention on the controls or do it remotely through an application for mobile devices (myAudi app). There is more information about these systems on this page of the A8 article.

 Audi A7 2019 Interior

The A7 has two very spacious front seats and three rear seats as an option. The central is for little more than one-off use. This five-seater configuration is optional (€ 365), since there are only two behind as standard. The cabin seems to be manufactured with care, both because of how the different pieces fit together (you don’t see the differences found, for example, in a Jaguar) and because of the materials used (leather, Alcantara, metal, and plastics that look very good).

Regarding the latter, we again complain about the use of «piano black» plastic. Audi has placed it along with the dashboard and it is usually covered with fingerprints and dust. This, together with the stains left on the screens during use, makes it essential to carry a cloth to avoid seeing these always dirty pieces. Another point for improvement is the use of metal surfaces on the console due to the reflections that, on occasions, they produce, especially those in the area of the start button and the radio volume (this surface has a concave shape; image).

Getting out of a low car, especially when parked next to a curb, can be a problem for those who are not agile or for those who simply find it a nuisance. This Audi is one of them, so, at least for these people, we recommend that they try to get in and out of the car several times at the dealership to ensure that this will not pose a problem during use.

Access to the rear seats is less uncomfortable than it might seem due to the fall of the roof. Once in them, there is enough room up to the ceiling for people of approximately five foot five. The central seat is uncomfortable and, if you sit on it, you have to place your feet where those of the passengers in the side seats go since the transmission tunnel is very bulky.

Passengers in the outboard seats can place their feet under the front seats, as there is enough room for them. Also, these rear passengers have adjustable air vents in the center pillars and the end of the console. There are also controls for air conditioning (with four-zone climate), two USB power sockets, and one for 12 V (image). The backrest of the central plaza can be folded down and used as an armrest. In it, there are a pair of drink holders and a drawer, upholstered, with space for something flat like a couple of mobiles or a small tablet (image). There are also hooks for clothes next to the roof handle and on the center pillar.

Up to three displays can be found on the A7 . One is optional (the instrument panel, which measures 12.3 inches diagonally; sample images) and is associated with the most expensive navigation system (MMI Navigation Plus; € 1,767). If purchased, the screen that is placed in the upper area of the dashboard is larger (10.1 inches) than the standard one (8.8).

The third screen (8.6 inches; standard) is placed below the previous one. Many functions are handled from it, replacing the usual physical controls, such as the air conditioning of the car, some functions of the seats or it is also used to enter texts, either as a keyboard or by writing directly on them (example images). Text recognition is vastly better than in any other car: it is case-sensitive, and even continuous handwriting (that of a 9-year-old). This screen replaces the MMI rotary knob that, for now, is still present in some lower-cost Audi models. Its operation is somewhat different from that of other screens: the first pressure on it activates the selected area and it is necessary to press harder to execute the order. In general, its use does not produce dissatisfaction, although for some functions we still think that a button or a traditional roulette is preferable.

All the screens look good and we think that the instrument panel is especially recommended because the browser can also be viewed on it. It is more comfortable to do it there than on the one on your right because you have to look less.

Except for the screens, Audi has not used any artifice to attract attention. The gear knob does not emerge from either side and the vents are traditional and are operated directly by hand (on the Porsche Panamera, it is done from the screen and is very uncomfortable).

You can choose between three steering wheel designs (one with four arms and two with three, one of these flattened at the bottom) and its rim can be heated. It is also possible to choose two types of seats other than the standard ones. To those who value comfort over having a little more support in the curves (or a more striking appearance) we recommend, without a doubt, the comforts instead of the sports ones because they are the only ones that can have ventilation and massage, a function very appreciated on hot days because it avoids having a wet back. Of course, they have a very high price (€ 3,055) and do not include air conditioning and massage functions (€ 1,895 more). The massage is produced by 10 pneumatic chambers and there are seven programs with three levels of intensity.

The trunk has 535 liters of capacity, the same as in the previous generation. They are 40 liters more than that of a Porsche Panamera, 15 liters more than the Mercedes-Benz CLS Coupe, and 75 less than a BMW 6 Series Gran Coupe (comparison sheet). It is very deep and not very high. The gate – electrically opening – leaves a very wide access opening and the loading edge is 67 cm from the ground, which is an average value.

To avoid some drafts when opening the tailgate or to make the sunless disturbing to the rear passengers, the luggage tray has an optional perforated piece of fabric (image) that can be placed vertically (image), adjusted between the roof and the tray.

The keyless access system to the car is optional (€ 796), as is the mechanism that completes the automatic door closing (€ 621). The gate can be operated with a gesture of the foot (a small kick) to activate it when the hands are loaded. During the days that we have had the A7 it has happened to us that it has been activated several times involuntarily; It is the first time that this has happened to us in a car, at least on so many occasions.

The sunroof is also optional, which in this case is of normal dimensions, not panoramic. It can be carried openly at maximum speed on the highway without air currents being produced inside; what can bother you is the noise.

Audi A7 2019 Driving impressions

The Audi A7 2019 is a car-oriented to travel comfortably in it. Audi says it wanted to give it a more dynamic approach than the A8. I haven’t driven this one, but doing miles on the Audi A7 2019 is a nice experience.

In part it is due to equipment elements that have nothing to do with the dynamic part – comfortable seats, with ventilation and heating and a massage function, unless sports are chosen, which can only be heated – but mainly because of how suspension isolates passengers and low noise level. Both factors contribute to the relaxing environment that it is enjoyed.

Whoever gives importance to the silence of the march should buy the laminated windows (610 €). The car that we have driven in Spain did not have them, while the ones in the presentation in South Africa did. The difference is notable, mainly because it travels more isolated from aerodynamic noise.

All the A7 that we have driven had air spring suspension (which includes variable stiffness shock absorbers) and steering on the rear wheels (both elements are optional), always with Michelin Pilot Sport 4 tires. technical there is more information about the suspensions available (which are four).

With air suspension, comfort is high. It filters small irregularities very well and gently absorbs large ones. What the Audi A7 2019 cannot have is the suspension called Audi AI available on the A8; This suspension is capable, in the A8, of preparing to absorb the bumps in front thanks to the reading of the road (through a camera) acting on four motors that drive the suspension of each wheel and that also serve to reduce the roll and body pitch and to raise one side of the car 8 centimeters (in half a second) in case it is going to receive a side impact at more than 25 km / h. An Audi technician has told us that the A7 does not have it as it is a “device focused on comfort, while the A7 is oriented on dynamism.”

The Audi Drive Select-control allows you to select a different operation of the engine and gearbox, steering, suspension, and cruise control. Using it, it is possible to check the difference between the most comfortable suspension setting (on fast roads you can feel how the body oscillates vertically as irregularities occur) and the most firm.

The steering has the typical Audi feel: it is highly assisted, precise, and does not convey the (poor) condition of the asphalt to the driver’s hands. The latter will be drivers who may find it a problem, but, in general, I think it should be this way. At least with the steering rear axle (which means having a variable ratio on the front wheels), steering is fast.

We have measured the performance of the Audi A7 2019 with the 286 hp Diesel engine (50 TDI version). They have been better (six tenths in acceleration from 80 to 120 km / h) than those we obtained with the A8 L with the same engine, which weighs 120 kg more (comparative sheet). In the presentation, we also drove the 55 TFSI 340 hp variant and the feeling it gave us is that the difference between one and the other is not as obvious as the difference in power may lead to suppose (and the data that Audi gives of the acceleration of 0 to 100 km / h seems to confirm that impression). In any case, both have plenty of power to move at high speed and accelerate forcefully between curves.

We have been struck by the delay since the acceleration is full and the car begins to pick up speed. It has happened to us with both the 55 TFSI version and the 50 TDI. The change takes time to downshift, but it cannot be your “fault” since it is different —S Tronic (dual-clutch) on gasoline and Tiptronic (torque converter) on Diesel. It also happens when requesting power to, for example, overtake, but we have also experienced it when trying to start quickly from a standstill. The latter does not seem like a problem to us since normally nobody leaves a traffic light or a stop at full speed; in the other case, when going to overtake, it is convenient to take this into account to anticipate by stepping on the accelerator a little earlier or simply reducing manually.

These two versions of the Audi A7 2019 have a more evolved system of inertia advance function. When the transmission selects neutral because, under certain conditions, the driver does not demand power, he is also able to turn off the combustion engine. The only way to notice it is to look at the lap counter given that at 120 km / h unless you are very attentive, no noise or vibration reveals it (more information on the technical page in the section on the 48-volt electrical network ). The same technology allows the automatic stop and starts function of the engine when reaching, for example, a traffic light, to activate (stop the engine) when descending from 22 km / h instead of waiting to be almost stopped. Also, the engine is automatically restarted if the car in front starts moving before the driver takes his foot off the brake.

Despite its size, weight, and power, the consumption of the 50 TDI version is not high and it allows a lot of space for refueling. In the comparative route by highway (more information at the bottom of this page), it has used 7.3 l / 100 km, a moderate value although worse than the one we obtained with the BMW 730d that achieved an excellent result (6.3 l / 100 km). The Audi data is in line with that obtained by a similar model, the Mercedes-Benz CLS 350 CDI with 265 hp (7.1).

There are three types of headlights, always LEDs. The matrix-type, which are optional, give a very good result; There are two types, normal (€ 2,065) or with an LED for long ones (€ 3,410). Given how well the normal ones shine, it seems to us dispensable to acquire the others given the enormous price difference. The advantage of the laser is that it can shine farther. In this video, we show how this type of matrix headlamp works on the previous generation Audi A8.

The active cruise control works as well as they currently do, that is, it does not match a driver’s ability to interpret traffic. Where it is best used is when there is not much traffic and you do not have to constantly brake. This system receives information from the browser and the camera that reads traffic signs, adjusting the speed to the limit at all times (it can be configured not to do so or to do so with a certain margin). On one-way roads, allow for curves or approaching a roundabout to adjust for speed.

The controller can be used in conjunction with the Lane Centering Assist. This helps to maintain the car without getting out of it, but it should not be used to guide it by itself (in fact there are motorway curves that it is not capable of taking) but as an aid. Also, if the steering wheel is released, after a few seconds, warnings begin to appear on the instrument panel, which is followed, in case of lack of response by the driver, by a few braking and pulling of the seat belt. When the driver is the one operating the accelerator, he can receive warnings about excessive speed by small pulses generated in the accelerator pedal (a warning light also appears in the box).

A very striking optional element is the three-dimensional image (examples) generated by the cameras placed on the outside of the car (example video) and that BMW premiered in the 7 Series. Scope of view (a bollard). In addition to the three-dimensional display, you can see the usual images from each of the cameras (examples).

Audi A7 2019 Technical information

The dimensions of the second generation Audi A7 2019 are almost traced to those of the previous one. It has a length of 4.97 meters, a width of 1.90 m, a height of 1.42 m, and a wheelbase of 2.93 m. It is therefore just as long and tall, and one centimeter narrower than the model it replaces; his battle grows two centimeters.

The drag coefficient is 0.27, a good value but no better than its rivals. But the resistance factor, which is the important figure since it indicates the resistance to advance (it is the product of the previous coefficient and the front surface), is 0.63, it is good (comparison sheet). In the hatchback, there is a rear spoiler that appears automatically from 120 km / h and that can generate a maximum aerodynamic load of up to 50 kg.

The chassis is made mostly of steel, of different types. Aluminum is used for all the body panels (except the rear wings) and in the following parts: the suspension cups and the reinforcing arm that joins them, the roof frame reinforcements, the central cross member under the floor, and the plates that are inside the central pillars. Its weight is similar to that of other equivalent models (comparative sheet).

The suspension is independent on all four wheels using a five-link system. These are attached to the chassis using two subframes (the rear with hydraulic supports). As standard, the springs are helical and the shock absorbers normal. This configuration can be changed with the three options offered by Audi: sports suspension (€ 407), suspension with damping control (€ 1,097), and air suspension (€ 1,933).

The sports car has shorter springs and firmer shock absorbers; lowers the height to 10 mm. The one with damping control has electronically regulated dampers. The pneumatic one has the same shock absorbers and pneumatic springs that vary the height of the body (the lower it by 10 mm from 120 km / h or it can be raised above its normal level at the will of the driver to avoid an obstacle.

The front brake calipers (which are made of aluminum) have six pistons.

Dynamic four-wheel steering

With this option (€ 1,845), all four wheels on the Audi A7 2019 are steered. The rear ones rotate up to five degrees in the opposite direction to the front ones when driving at less than 60 km / h (the turning diameter is reduced by up to 1.1 meters). If they go faster, they go in the opposite direction (at a smaller maximum angle) to improve stability. Combining the turning of all four wheels, the value of the steering ratio varies between a minimum of 9.5 to 1 (very fast) and 16.5 to 1 (normal). To equip it, you must also mount the suspension with damping control or the pneumatic.

The size of the offered rims varies between 17 and 21 inches in diameter. The stability control has a function capable of detecting if one is incorrectly positioned.

48-volt electrical system

Audi has developed what they call a simple hybrid system of the “mild-hybrid” type (MHEV). Unlike a normal hybrid, this one is not capable of moving the car using only electrical energy but there are circumstances (between 55 and 160 km / h, when the driver does not step on the accelerator) in which the Audi A7 2019 advances with the engine combustion off. Audi quantifies a consumption saving of 0.7 l / 100 km.

It consists of an electrical machine, connected to the crankshaft by a belt, which performs the function of the generator and starter. With this system (its name in English is BAS, for Belt Alternator Starter) Audi manages to recover more energy during deceleration phases (up to 12 kW) and can restart the combustion engine imperceptibly. This system does not allow the usual drive pinion starter to be dispensed with, as it is necessary for cold starts.

This electric machine is powered by a lithium-ion battery with a capacity of 480 Wh, energy that allows the car to move forward by inertia with the heat engine off for up to 40 seconds without there being any power supply problems. The nominal voltage of this circuit is 48 V. The battery has an estimated life similar to that of the vehicle and is placed in the trunk, under its floor (it is wider and less high than the 12 V, which goes on one side).

This hybrid system is present in the 50 TDI, 45 TDI, and 55 TFSI versions. In the Audi A8, this 48-volt mains supply is also used for the electric motors of the Audi AI suspension (which is not available on the A7).
