2021 Lincoln Aviator: nieuwe stijl en herziening

Lincoln keeps reviving old names and this time it was the turn of the Aviator. Ford’s luxury division unveiled the reborn 2021 Aviator at the Los Angeles Auto Show to fight in the midsize luxury SUV segment where it will have a lot of competition from its European rivals such as the Mercedes GLE, Audi Q7, and BMW X5. . Its German rivals dominate the market, so Lincoln has given the new Aviator all the possible tools to be very competitive within its segment.

Lincoln presented the concept of this SUV during the New York Auto Show in March, and it is confirmed that what we saw there was practically a production version since the final product is very similar. It is not identical, but it has many elements that are felt like an adaptation of what we saw in the concept rather than a substitution. It features LED headlights upfront and a huge chrome grille while the rear looks almost identical to the concept with the very thin brake lights.

We think that the interior would be the one that would undergo the greatest change from the concept, but it is also very similar. It has premium leather upholstery, a digital instrument panel, and a huge central screen for the infotainment system. It will have the latest in brand technology including a new system in which the cell phone can be used as a key. It will also have a “smart” suspension that can “see” the bumps in the road and adapt to make the ride as smooth as possible. All the semi-autonomous driving assistants will also be present.

The new Aviator will share a platform with the next Ford Explorer so it has the rear-wheel drive as standard and all-wheel drive as an option. The base engine will be a 3.0-liter twin-turbo V6 with 400 horsepower and 400 lb.-ft. of torque mated to the 10-speed automatic. But the version that matters most to us is the plug-in hybrid that will feature 450 horsepower and 600 pound-feet of torque. Among its driving modes, there will be two that stand out: Pure EV that uses only the electric motor, and Preserve EV that uses only the combustion engine. So far nothing else has been mentioned about this engine.

Although we expected a little more information about the new Aviator, Lincoln has decided to keep some key information about its new SUV, such as its launch date and price. The brand is not very popular in Europe, so at the moment it will only be sold in North America and China. We hope that when they announce their date of arrival to the market they will also let us know when they will start selling in USA.
