Peugeot 7008: A large SUV coupe in preparation

The first images of the Peugeot 7008 appeared. Building on the success of its 2008, 3008 and 5008 SUVs, Peugeot has relaunched this year the project of a fourth SUV in the range. Known under the code name P94, this vehicle will take the form of a coupe by 2024, and will also serve as the basis for a large SUV at DS.

The project of a large SUV is not new at Peugeot. In 2011, the manufacturer presented the SXC concept at the Shanghai Motor Show. A top-of-the-range 4.87 m SUV that looked like a coupe. On the verge of bankruptcy, the PSA group has logically put this vehicle to sleep without completely forgetting it. Indeed, around 2015, the subject came back on the carpet in particular to expand the DS range.

Platform problem

Except that at the time, the EMP2 platform and its maximum wheelbase of 2.84 m (on the Citroën C4 Space Tourer) were too short. The French group has surveyed a few manufacturers for a possible technical partnership, notably Volvo. The cost nipped the project in the bud. At the time, Christian Chapelle (former head of powertrain development) mentioned the possibility of an internal solution.

That was none other than the extended EMP2 base for the Citroën Space Tourer and Peugeot Traveler with a wheelbase ranging from 2.93 to 3.28 m. Another problem is that a four-wheel-drive transmission is a must in this type of vehicle. This is no longer a problem with the Hybrid4 architecture of 300 hp or 100% electric with a second engine at the rear.

Peugeot 7008: 100% electric

As the technical barriers have disappeared, Peugeot has been working on a large SUV project this year. It is, therefore, risky to venture to present a visual of this vehicle. According to our information, it will take on the appearance of a BMW X6 or Mercedes GLE coupé-style coupe, which fits in well with the brand’s DNA.

This P94 project is part of the renewal program for the 3008 and 5008, Peugeot’s golden egg hens. Since the latter is scheduled for 2023, the Peugeot 7008 in question should land in showrooms during 2024. To respect the drop in CO2 emissions decided by Europe (around 60 g / km in 2025), and the wishes of the Chinese market, the Peugeot will be available in a 100% electric version (Nidec engines and new-generation solid battery). A 2.0 BlueHDi diesel version and a plug-in hybrid are not excluded. Of course, these initial specifications can still evolve.

DS, premium brand of the PSA group, will also develop a vehicle (DS8 Crossback?) On this basis which will oversee the DS7 Crossback in the range. Besides China, these two large SUVs will serve the ambition of the PSA group to return to North America. While for now, it is moving cautiously with the launch of its Free2Move car-sharing service, the aim is to market vehicles adapted to local tastes. That is to say rather large SUVs!

A vehicle (100% electric) on which DS has already worked as part of a project (Arion Technologies Automobiles) bringing together Quebec, Exagon, and PSA, launched in 2016. The first financed the manufacturing plant, the second developed the electrical components and the third was studying an SUV. In early 2018, Quebec put an end to this industrial adventure for financial reasons.
