Ferrari 340 America 1952: leilão de mecum

The history of this 12-cylinder Ferrari 340 extends from Le Mans to eBay. It even had a V8 and a plastic body. Mecum, a large auction house in the USA, is always good for surprises. Like this Ferrari 340 America, for example, which is currently for sale.

The blue-painted 12-cylinder Ferrari has seen a lot in six decades: triumphs and defeats, several conversions, and thorough restoration. Now it is back to the way it could have looked back in 1952. Ferrari Classiche has researched and documented history. A book shows the main stations of chassis number 0202A.

The history of the 340 America ranges from its use in the Le Mans 24 Hours to eBay. In 1952, Andre Simon and Lucien Vincent finished fifth in this car at the 24-hour race on the Sarthe.

After the racing successes, chassis 020A came to the USA via Luigi Chinetti. Dealing with a racing car was a little more robust at the end of the 1950s than it is today: the V12 was thrown out by a Texan owner and a Chevrolet V8 was put into the chassis in its place.

After an accident, the original Vignale body was also replaced: the Ferrari was converted into an open racing car. After this body was also damaged during transport, a fiberglass body was placed on the tubular frame chassis. The original engine had been sold to Chicago. In 1963, the Ferrari’s track was finally lost in Salt Lake City.

Another expert finds that chassis 0202A is one of 24 Ferrari 340 America. Times are getting better again for the former Le Mans car. It is completely rebuilt, the Vignale body designed by Michelotti is re-gelled, and a 4.1-liter V12 engine is installed. Ferrari Classiche certifies the original condition and history of the car with a book. Now the car is for sale. Mecum does not name a price. But 12-cylinder Ferraris with racing history are among the most expensive classic cars in the world.

Amazing what could happen to a 12-cylinder Ferrari that was already valuable decades ago. But now chassis 0202A seems to be back in the shape it left the factory in Maranello in 1952. It is unclear, however, whether the original engine that was sold to Chicago in the meantime is back in it. In purely functional terms, it makes no difference, historically it does.
