Bentley Continental GT 2021: Harika!

The Bentley Continental GT is the sportiest model marketed by the British firm Bentley. It is a coupe in a 2 + 2-seater configuration characterized by offering a concept where maximum luxury and the highest performance prevail. The latest evolution of the Continental GT series was presented in 2017, premiering a completely new generation and thus signing the third complete renovation.

There are not many rivals that you can find in the market, although more and more are aspiring to measure themselves, in terms of comfort, exclusivity, and luxury, with it. The closest rivals are the Mercedes S-Class Coupé, the Rolls-Royce Wraith, and the Aston Martin DB11. (See buying guide with the most expensive cars on the market to know all the information about the rivals of the Continental GT.)

Bentley Continental GT exterior design

At the level of exterior design, the Bentley Continental GT has evolved but has always remained faithful to the lines and musculature that the first generation released in 2003. In this latest revision, its character and sportiness have been reinforced by taking for itself the aesthetics shown for the first time in the Bentley EXP 10 Speed 6 prototype, a conceptual model that had both a coupe and convertible variant and that hid the lines of this generation of the Continental GT.

In this third generation, it is worth highlighting the double commitment defended by its head of design Stefan Sielaff, who gave us an interview where he revealed the keys to the design of this Continental GT. We are talking about an idea of reinvention as shown in front or behind, where it has opted for a classic image but much more stylized and full of sports details, but at the same time, an elegant and continuous image was defended in the set as discovered by its side view.

It is precisely at the rear where the third generation of the Continental GT breaks the most with its predecessors, something that is achieved with an unprecedented oval design for its LED optics, as well as a more prone roof drop and a significantly lower height of the tailgate.

V8 and W12 engines

In the technical section, the Bentley Continental GT shares many elements with the Porsche Panamera, a model from which it borrows elements such as its multi-chamber air suspension equipment, the infotainment system, the active stabilizers or the 48-volt architecture also used in the Bentley Bentayga and the Audi SQ7 without going any further.

If we focus on the powertrain, the Bentley Continental GT also bears great similarities to the Porsche saloon. For this third generation, the transmission group has been completely revised, dispensing with the 8-speed automatic transmission by torque converter used in many Audi models such as the Audi A7, and going to use a brand new 8-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission by the second generation of the Porsche Panamera.

The all-wheel-drive system is also new, ditching Audi’s permanent all-wheel-drive setup in favor of employing a controlled center-differential all-wheel-drive setup that only acts on the front axle under grip loss conditions. In this way, the Continental GT behaves in most circumstances like a propulsion car, modifying its behavior depending on the state of the road or according to the selected driving program.

The thruster offering is based on two architectures. The first one is our own, a 6.0 W12 TSI engine with 635 HP of maximum power and 900 Nm of torque, a very peculiar “W” motor design on the market that is only used in some Volkswagen Group manufacturers such as Bugatti, Volkswagen, Audi and Bentley itself.

This W12 engine is manufactured at the Bentley plant in Crewe, England, a factory that you can tour through our visit to the factory and headquarters of Bentley Motors. With the W12 engine in 635 hp configuration, the Bentley Continental GT signs a 0-100 km / h in 3.7 seconds and reaches a maximum speed of 333 km / h. (see a test of the Bentley Continental GT with W12 engine).

From March 2019, a new 4.0 V8 Twin-Turbo engine of Porsche origin with 550 hp of maximum power and 770 Nm of torque is available in the range. It is a mechanic that gives access to the Continental GT range and which in turn becomes the engine that achieves the best records in terms of efficiency. This same engine can be found in other models such as the Bentley Bentayga or the Porsche Cayenne and it replaces the 4.0 V8 Twin-Turbo engine developed by Audi and used by many other models of the automobile group such as the second-generation Bentley Continental GT itself or the Audi RS7 Performance that we put to the test in Diariomotor.

In the case of choosing the V8 engine, the rest of the technical configuration of the Continental GT remains intact, thus finding a 0-100 Km / h in 4 seconds for the coupe body (4.1 seconds in the Convertible) and a tip 318 km / h.

The interior design of the Continental GT

Broadly speaking, the Continental GT has always been shown as a luxury GT, with very high performance, but with a remarkable classic aftertaste. Thus, one of its fundamental pillars is the use of the best materials in the construction of its cabin, a very high degree of comfort, and a remarkable simplicity and comfort for driving at very high speeds.

All this results in a dynamic designed more for the enjoyment of driving than for a purely sporty behavior. The Mulliner division is the department that Bentley makes available to its customers to customize their models to the last detail, with infinite possibilities when choosing paintings, materials, upholstery, motifs, etc.

The interior of the Bentley Continental GT has released in its latest generation the greatest evolution ever seen in the model. Despite maintaining that classic vehicle aura with numerous details reminiscent of the great luxury vehicles of the last century, Bentley has managed to implement the latest technologies and driving aids available on the market to offer an updated luxury GT.

Thus it is possible to find a multimedia system with a touch screen in high definition with 12.3 “, a fully digital instrument panel, adaptive cruise control with jam assistant function, autonomous emergency braking with pedestrian detection, etc.

Bentley Continental GT Convertible

How could it be otherwise, the Continental GT also offers a convertible variant under the name Continental GT Convertible. This body was launched in November 2018 and is available under the same technical possibilities as the coupe variant, that is, with V8 and W12 engines.

The redesign of the bodywork to convert it into a convertible allows this Bentley to be discovered in a time of 19 seconds and at speeds of up to 50 km / h. According to Bentley, the design of this canvas roof allows it to offer a level of insulation very similar to that of the coupe body. As with the colors of its body, the retractable roof can be configured in infinite tones and even fabrics, also having the possibility of having Mulliner further expand that catalog of options.
