The new Volkswagen Golf R is already a reality. The long-awaited new generation of the iconic Volkswagen sports compact burst onto the scene loaded with new features. Under its hood, there is a gasoline engine that reaches 320 hp. We are facing the most powerful series Golf of all time.
The wait is over. The new generation of the Volkswagen Golf R has entered society. The renewal of the iconic and interesting Volkswagen sports compact is now a reality. This model, a true central pillar of the family of R models of the German manufacturer, receives its fifth generation. A generational change that brings with it very important news that goes far beyond a new image.
Volkswagen warns we are facing the most powerful series Golf of all time. A model that will play an important role in the new Golf family launched with the commercial launch of the eighth-generation Volkswagen Golf. The German compact fireproof has been used as the basis for the creation of a model that will delight lovers of sporty driving and, above all, high performance.
The design of the new Volkswagen Golf R 2021
Now, how has the Golf R changed? Just take a quick look at the images that accompany this article to discover the main novelties in the aesthetic section. Let’s start with the exterior design, as compared to the outgoing model, the changes are obvious. Let’s put the focus on the front. The new bumper with a motorsport-style splitter stands out. It also sports side spoilers along with specific R ventilation grills.
All black painted components have a glossy finish. On the upper grille, the new Golf R features a blue crossbar typical of R models. As soon as the car is started it lights up for the first time as an LED strip, and as a daytime running light. Also, it is equipped with LED headlights as standard. If we look at the side view, the 18-inch light-alloy wheels will attract our attention. 19-inch wheels are optionally available. In any case, they expose the high-performance braking system. The side skirts are also exclusive, as are the exterior mirror caps.
The Golf R’s body height is 20 millimeters lower compared to a conventional Golf. And ending our tour of the exterior at the rear, we will find several components to note, such as the glossy black diffuser, the roof spoiler, the specific bumper, and the sports exhaust system with four outputs. Incidentally, Volkswagen optionally offers an Akrapovic titanium exhaust system. The bodywork is available in three colors: Lapiz Blue Metallic, Pure White, and Deep Black Pearl Effect.
Volkswagen Golf R 2021 Interior
Let’s put the exterior aside and venture inside the new Golf R. We will quickly find ourselves engulfed in a technological environment that breathes sportiness. The new Golf R 2021 echoes all the technological advances already seen in the new eighth-generation Golf. It is equipped with a Volkswagen Digital Cockpit Pro digital instrument panel and the Discover Media infotainment system with a 10-inch touch screen.
The graphics of the new multimedia system can be adapted to enjoy an even more immersive experience. Optionally, the keyless access and start system can be equipped. It has beautiful sports seats with integrated head restraints and a leather-wrapped multifunction sports steering wheel with an “R” button. The interior equipment of the new Golf R has also been customized and expanded.
The aforementioned seats are upholstered in a “Sardegna” design and the black and blue color scheme is maintained. You can optionally opt for a black Nappa leather upholstery with carbon-look elements. We must not overlook the gearshift paddles that have increased in size. The driving experience is accompanied by an ambient lighting system with 30 colors.
The powerful engine of the new Volkswagen Golf R 2021
If we take a look under the hood of the new generation Golf R we will find a 2.0-liter TSI four-cylinder petrol engine that develops a power of 320 hp and 420 Nm of maximum torque. As we pointed out at the beginning of the article, this is the most powerful series Golf ever created. Concerning the previous model and that is already out, the power has been increased by 20 CVs and 20 Nm respectively.
Thanks to a whole series of solutions and adjustments, the new Golf R complies with the current requirements of the Euro 6d-ISC-FCM emissions standard. The engine is associated with a seven-speed dual-clutch DSG automatic gearbox and a new all-wheel-drive system called R-Performance Torque Vectoring that we will detail later.
This mechanical package enables the new Golf R to accelerate from 0 to 100 km / h in 4.6 seconds and an electronically limited top speed of 250 km / h. Top speed can be increased to 270 km / h if the optional R-Performance package is equipped.
The new R-Performance Torque Vectoring all-wheel-drive system
One of the keys to the fifth generation of Volkswagen Golf R is the entry on the scene of the new all-wheel-drive system called R-Performance Torque Vectoring. A newly developed rear axle drive distributes the driving force variably between the front and rear axles. Also, as a novelty, also variably between the left and right rear wheel.
Volkswagen’s 4Motion powertrain differential transmits power to the rear left and right wheels with a 50:50 ratio via the multi-disc clutch. Both wheels are driven with the same torque. However, the new R-Performance Torque Vectoring traction system also allows the torque to be distributed variably between the two rear wheels. When cornering, up to 100% of the drive torque applied to the outer wheel is transmitted to the corner to eliminate understeer driving behavior.
The intensity of the force distribution is determined by the corresponding steering angle, the position of the accelerator pedal, the lateral acceleration, the angular velocity, and the vehicle speed. It is possible to influence this all-wheel-drive system by using the standard-equipped driving profile selector, which allows you to choose between these modes: Comfort, Sport, Race, and Individual.
The new Volkswagen Golf R 2021 debuts DRIFT mode
In addition to the aforementioned all-wheel-drive system, it is possible to equip an optional package called R-Performance which, in addition to increasing the maximum speed as we have previously indicated, adds these two driving profiles: Special and Drift. The selection of the driving profile can be accessed directly using the R button on the multifunction steering wheel.
In the Drift driving profile, the parameters adjusted on closed circuits allow the Golf R to be drifted using the electronic stabilization program ESP and the new all-wheel-drive system.
The standard-fitted adaptive suspension sports (DCC) suspension can also be adjusted. For the first time, and as a world-first for the new Golf R, all-wheel drive is interconnected with DCC adaptive suspension, ESP with Electronic Differential Block (XDS), and progressive steering via a first-introduced gear dynamics manager in this model.
